For Sharon Cotter, performing has always been part of life. From her early days singing and appearing on television in Wales to leading roles in musical theatre and memorable performances across New Zealand, her voice has taken her on quite a journey.

With a repertoire spanning musical theatre, classical favourites, timeless ballads and songs inspired by her Welsh heritage, Sharon brings warmth, personality and a little theatre to every performance.

Whether on stage, at a special event or performing for an intimate audience, it’s always about the same thing, connecting with people through music.

About Sharon

From a young voice in Wales to the stages of New Zealand

Sharon’s love of performing began at just 11 years old in Wales, where she started out singing country music and accompanying herself on guitar. Before long, she was performing professionally several times a week, beginning a career that would take her from live music and television to theatre stages on the other side of the world.

Her years in Wales brought an eclectic mix of experiences. Sharon performed as a solo artist and lead singer, toured as a backing vocalist, appeared on Welsh television and worked alongside respected musicians including Terry Williams of Dire Straits, Davy Spillane and Dónal Lunny. She also won the televised talent competition Gweld Sêr, selected from more than 8,000 entries.

After moving to New Zealand in 1995, a whole new chapter began. Sharon discovered musical theatre and quickly found a natural home on stage. Her roles have included Eva Perón in Evita, Anna in The King and I and Grizabella in CATS, alongside appearances as a guest soprano at concerts and special events throughout New Zealand.

Over the years, Sharon’s repertoire has continued to evolve, but her love of performing has never changed. From the drama of musical theatre and the beauty of a timeless ballad to a song that takes her straight back to Wales, every performance carries a little of the journey that brought her here.

From theatre stages and television studios to concert halls and international sporting events, Sharon’’s career has brought plenty of unforgettable moments.

Musical theatre

Sharon has performed a range of principal roles in; as Eva Peron in Evita, Anna in the King & I, Grizabella in CATS, and Donna in Mamma Mia. Other stage appearances have included Showboat, Orpheus in the Underworld and Monty Python’s Spamalot.

Concerts & special performances

As a guest soprano, Sharon has performed at The Proms, appeared alongside the late Rob Guest during his New Zealand Heartland Tour, and performed at Eastwoodhill Arboretum’s Centennial Gala Dinner for the Governor-General of New Zealand and invited guests.

A proud Welsh moment

One particularly special performance brought Sharon’s Welsh roots to the centre stage when she sang the Welsh National Anthem ahead of the All Blacks v Wales test match at Waikato Stadium. She later performed the anthem at Eden Park during the 2011 Rugby World Cup semi-final between Wales and France.

Where it all began

Before moving to New Zealand, Sharon built her career in Wales as a solo performer, lead singer and backing vocalist. She appeared on Welsh television, toured with established musicians and won the televised talent competition Gweld Sêr from more than 8,000 entries.

She might have played the Diva, but that is the antithesis of the off-stage Sharon who sees herself as just one of the company doing what she loves most. What a pleasure and a privilege it is to have Sharon in a production.”
